Who this route suits
This route suits independent travellers who enjoy walking, cultural visits, and staying in one place long enough to find a favourite breakfast stop. It assumes reasonably comfortable walking days, with shorter alternatives when needed. The night allocation is a starting point: adapt it for your flights, mobility, budget, and interests. Intercity transfers take up part of the day even when the train itself is quick.
Your days, with room around them.
DAY 1 / Rome
Arrive and settle in
Keep the first afternoon local. Check in, take a short walk, and have an easy dinner near your accommodation. Make no important paid reservation depend on your flight arriving on time.
DAY 2 / Rome
Ancient Rome, with a pause
Make a Colosseum and Forum visit the main activity. Leave time for security and exposed walking, then have lunch around Monti. A quiet late afternoon is a useful counterweight.
DAY 3 / Rome
Choose your Rome
Choose either a Vatican-focused day or a historic-centre walk with selected interiors. They are substantial alternatives, not two halves of a compulsory checklist. Keep dinner close to your base.
DAY 4 / Florence
A genuine transfer day
Check out and take a booked train to Florence, confirming the station on the ticket. Allow time to leave your bags and settle in. Walk near the Arno later; save major museums for tomorrow.
DAY 5 / Florence
One major art visit
Choose the Uffizi or Accademia according to your interests and reserve through the official venue. Follow the visit with lunch and a walk across the river. Leave a viewpoint optional.
DAY 6 / Florence
Neighbourhoods, not another city
Spend the morning around the cathedral area, checking entry arrangements for any interior. Explore Santo Spirito later. This day stays in Florence rather than adding a hurried countryside excursion.
DAY 7 / Departure
Leave a sensible margin
Have breakfast and travel onwards according to your actual flight or train. If you depart from Rome, plan the return journey explicitly; do not assume it fits comfortably before an early flight.
Make it your own
If your arrival is late, treat the first day entirely as a settling-in day. Travelling with children or preferring fewer check-ins? Add nights to a favourite base and remove a destination. For a coastal trip, build a separate route around Naples and the Amalfi Coast rather than inserting a long detour into this one. Puglia also deserves a focused itinerary. In the fourteen-day route, a town base with selected transport can replace the farmhouse stay if you prefer not to drive.
What to reserve before you go
Start with accommodation and the journeys that connect your bases. Then check official availability for the few museums and attractions that matter most. Read fare and cancellation conditions rather than comparing only headline prices. For rural nights, confirm arrival arrangements and meal options. Use Trenitalia or Italo for current rail options, and leave a generous airport margin. Never assume a suggested sightseeing day guarantees ticket availability.
